Suitable for kids age 8+

Black Dragon Fist  (Wulong Quan 乌龙拳) is a hybrid martial art that combines Subak, Baji, Pigua, and the Jingang Bashi. All four of these styles are unified by the “black dragon” coiling mechanic used by the waist. When practiced with the WuLong mechanic at their core, these styles integrate with one another to create a robust and flexible martial art system.

This art form excels in honing kicking mechanics. Aaron is adept at teaching kids as well as adults. Wu Long is straightforward enough that it is a great option for kids 8 years and older.

WuLong Quan is taught by Aaron Diaz, who has practiced Subak since 1990 and Baji/Pigua since 2003.

  • Creativity is key. Kids aren't burdened with memorizing forms. Instead they learn the capoeira kicks and attacks one by one with evasion options. Eventually, like learning to speak, they begin to string together the movements in games with each other.

  • Respect for and support of your classmates is central to capoeira. More advanced students are taught how to support their classmates. They learn how to help those who struggle improve their game and confidence.

  • Equality of the sexes is also a central tenant. This martial art does not revolve around brute strength. Growth in capoeira translates to an improved eye for movement, body confidence, physical coordination, sense of rhythm, a grasp of timing and musical ability.

  • Get the wiggles out. Capoeira is athletic. The fighting stance is a moving one. The kicks are big and powerful and the evasions can be downright gymnastic. But don't worry: the game can be adapted to all levels of flexibility and size.

 Kids' Classes consist of

  • Across the floor animal walking strength building drills

  • Learn a new kick and evasion

  • Apply this combination in games (musical partner game and Capoeira tag)

  • "Pimenta" Says

  • Acrobatic drills

  • Music: capoeira instruments and songs are practiced

  • "Roda": Capoeira play application whereby 2 people at a time play a Capoeira game with the support of the group's call and response song and instrumentals.

As capoeira can put a good deal of strain on the practitioner's body, we emphasize safety in class.  Teachers are well educated in anatomy and medicine.
