Capoeira
There is no better martial art for quickly increasing strength, agility and flexibility , and for cultivating community.
Capoeira classes focus on the fundamentals of the Capoeira the game (Jogo.) Students of all ages are taught the attacks, evasions and acrobatics of Capoeira in a supportive and inclusive environment. Class time is also dedicated to the study of Capoeira music and Besouro culture.
Although early written records on Capoeira are virtually nonexistent, we know from the oral tradition that this martial art was formed out of necessity by the African slave population held by the Portuguese in the 1500s. It was used to escape plantations and fight against well armed mounted colonial agents. It has been made illegal with brutal punishments, legalized and now declared an intangible cultural heritage (UNESCO) of Brazil.
